Amazon is dipping its giant toe into the book subscription model with the recently unveiled Amazon Unlimited program. Claiming to offer book lovers access to over 600,000 books and thousands of audio books, this Netflix-for-books plan is priced at $9.99 per month.
You can view the nitty-gritty here, but for me, the most pressing question is “How many books can I borrow?” The answer:
You can keep up to ten books at a time and there are no due dates.
Amazon further notes that you can read your Kindle Unlimited books on any Kindle device or by using the free Kindle reading apps.
Amazon is offering a free 30-day trial if you want to check it out (note that the program is currently only available to United States customers).
I’m thinking about giving it a test drive, but I’m not sure that at $10 a month, this will be a keeper for me. What about you?

Realistically I’d only read 1 book a month so for $10 I could just buy it.

I hear ya. I read about a book a week, but most of my books are a loan from the library or Amazon Prime and I get free ones from Amazon First and a few other places. If I come across a must-have that’s not available through one of those channels, I just buy it. I do think for the right person, this is a good deal. I may end up trying it out at some point. The one book I’m after right now (but don’t really have time to read so I’ll just wait with it a bit more 🙂 ) is Evan Osnos’s Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China. Unfortunately it’s not covered by the new Unlimited program so I’ll have to wait more. Now that I think about it, Unlimited may be a good fit for me, I read 3-4 books per month but start a lot more.. those that I don’t like I simply abandon, life is too short! 🙂

I came across a couple of articles on Unlimited that might be of interest: this one on TechCrunch and this one on Gizmodo. Apparently, Amazon’s ongoing battles with the big publishing houses is impacting the selection. I expected that Prime and Kindle First would promote Amazon-published titles, and I think there’s value in that, particularly in finding lesser-known authors and giving them a try. But Unlimited now seems a bit…well, limited. 🙂
Since I have Prime and I subscribed to First, I think I’m going to stick with that + the library + a few purchases here and there.
